T1106 Goat Sex Unit

The goat piece consists, as almost all of the pieces do, of a large free-standing box, on wheels, connected to an electricity supply. The box is gorgeous, made to look like a piece of high tech laboratory equipment. It looks like a machine. It looks like a freezer. It looks like the instrument of some twentieth century demonic scientist. It looks lush. Like a wardrobe resting on one of its sides, the goat piece has a big red button on one end and a head hole on one side. All is finished in lustrous black and white and held together by little white rivets on seamless polyurethane trims. You cannot reach the button and look through the hole at the same time. So, you ask someone in the exhibition to hold down the button while you look through. When you look through you find yourself looking in a mirror and you find your face as part of a picture. Your head is on the naked body of a man down on all fours. In the background is the private view which you are attending Black and white sculptures littering a vast Art gallery. Poised on your back is a goat - fucking you. There is an internal motor, which animates the beast haunches. Backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards. Whatever your reactions to seeing yourself taken like this, they are complicated by the fact that someone who you don't necessarily know is standing there, holding the button, and wondering what you are seeing.

The Self Pleasure Siulation Unit is in the form of an upright wardrobe shape, about seven-foot high. This time there are no red buttons, in fact there would appear to be no way to activate whatever mysteries lie within from the outside. There are two holes - a head hole at about average head height and an arm hole at about elbow height. You look in the box through the head hole. You see nothing. You put your hand through the hole and feel around in the dark. Your hand soon finds something, at around groin level. Suddenly the scene is illuminated, a light turns on at the top of the box, and you see yourself again. Your body is that of an ordinary man. You are naked in an ordinary room in an ordinary house, surrounded by objects and items indicative of your ordinariness. In your right (real) hand you hold a warm erect penis in your left (illusory) hand you hold a low grade, high street, pornography magazine. You drop the penis. The light goes off. Many people will find the image compelling and pick it up again. Some will undoubtedly drop it in horror and storm out of the show. To add yet another level of meaning and another issue to this already loaded work - the box is not alone. Next to it is a one third size replica of itself - a child's box. The electricity supply comes from the wall and into the smaller box. The larger box, then feeds - takes its supply, off the first. It cannot work without the smaller box. The smaller box is about a child's sexuality. Anyone curious enough to feel around in it to ascertain what image it contains will find nothing. There is no illumination and no image. There is no penis. The child's sexuality is it's business not ours, but our sexuality is formed by our childhood experiences and those experiences are indivisible from that sexuality.
